The Books to Africa Partnership began in 2012 as a grass-roots movement by a group of elementary students and their librarian Julie Hembree at Bell Elementary School in Kirkland, WA. They wanted to donate some new or gently used books they found to students in Africa who needed them. These students formed a team, and with the connections Julie has through the Microsoft Innovative Educator Network, they made their dream a reality.

This website began because we've grown so much since 2012. If you would like to read more about the history of this project, you can find an archive of posts on two other websites. My students began the project in September 2012, but it went live on Martin Luther King, Jr Day January 21, 2013. I originally started a Books to Africa blog and posted articles about projects and news there. Later the project was incorporated into the Bulldog Readers Blog.
